Everyone’s getting involved in MyFarm!
Since I know you’ve been asking, I can reveal that we hit 1000 members within our first 48 hours, which is great and well ahead of what we were hoping!
And what’s more important is all of you are already generating some wonderful stuff! We love your ideas, and are looking at them hard to work out which we can implement when, so we'll keep you posted.
Perhaps most of all, we’re really enjoying seeing all your reasons for getting involved.
One of my personal favourites is Farmer Kimama, who says: “I joined as a way for my family and I to understand more about where our food comes from. This is especially important for our children who in the age of fast food and ready meals have never experienced sowing, growing and reaping the rewards of hard work.”
Farmer Kimama, and several who are saying similar things, really reflects the research we did in the build up to this project. We found that mothers in particular rate the importance of their children understanding where their food comes from VERY highly – but that only 8% felt confident to teach them themselves. Sounds like Farmer Kimama might be ahead of the pack thanks to her parents’ allotment when she was growing up, but we’re really glad we can help!
Farmer JoJo is another of my personal faves: “I signed up as I am slowly turning our little 1/3 acre plot into a small holding (much to the husband's horror) and I thought that this might help distract me somewhat so that there is still some lawn and flowers remaining in the garden come the summer time. Or it will enthuse me even more and I'll learn lots of useful hints and tips.”
There’s a few other aspiring farmers out there alongside Farmer JoJo – here’s hoping we can be of service, and maybe even get the hubby a bit keener!
And finally, to cap off my current top 3, Farmer (or I should I say Farmers?!) Latchingdon: "Hello everyone. I'm a primary school teacher and have joined with my class. We all shared the cost. It's a great idea and has already generated much discussion."
Great to know that schools are seeing the value we're offering already, before we've really even got going!
So that's families, aspiring farmers, and schools... but the spread goes way beyond that! From Farmer Trevor Jonas Benson, who’s with us all the way from Barbados, to Farmer AliceCat, who’s extending the reach of the project beyond the human species, we seem to have a real universal appeal! Great stuff - now tell your friends and let's get on towards that magic 10000!

Day 12.....how many farmers do we have now ?
Great idea and signed up as soon as we read about the project in the NT Near You leaflet. Our family have visited Wimpole many times and the children are excited about "getting involved" - they have already asked if they can milk a cow!. Looking forward to learning the real side of farming and the true challenges us Farmers face.

Really excited by this life scale experiment. I joined because our entire way of living will change, in a world of eternal rising costs. The internet is a blessing which - oddly - offers more local relationship as well as revenue options for farmers (maybe someday at large!). This is the first step toward a new kind of society.
I have always been interested in the origin of food, and, at 56 years old, I am somewhat protective of British farmer's rights to have precedence to produce over food that masquerades as 'British' but has never seen these shores until it gets processed in one of our plants and then has the dubious right of stamping 'UK' on the packaging.
When I was young, my junior school was very progressive, in as much as we would go on field trips. These would be farms, a working windmill, and our local dairy in Armthorpe. I even got to eat cattle cake! (I had seconds...)
My wife has been into growing vegetables for some while now, and has recently invested in some permanent raised brick raised beds. The results are well worth the time and (not inconsiderable cost) that she has invested, and we have 'spread our wings' somewhat.
I am excited at the new venture, and as a retiree from the railways, it is already given me a enthusiasm. I am relishing the visit.
Best wishes,
Captain Carl
MyFarm - coming soon to National TV in Russia and China!!
This a great idea, can't wait to get started and see just what really goes into a year in the life of a farm. Will certainly get the family down to Cambridgeshire to take a look at the Farm as soon as practical. It would be great to get involved at some point too, maybe be a labourer for a day or weekend, volunteer myself if the farm could do with an extra pair of hands at a busy time.
